Yala Safari from Ella: How to Plan It

Ella to the Yala gate is about three hours each way. A day trip is possible, but almost everyone who does it wishes they had stayed the night.
The route and how long it really takes
From Ella you descend through Wellawaya and continue south through Thanamalwila to Tissamaharama, then on to the Palatupana gate near Kirinda. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours to Tissamaharama and another 30 minutes to the gate. The road out of Ella is winding and slow for the first hour, then opens up on the plains.
Buses run from Ella to Wellawaya and on to Tissamaharama, but with a change and unpredictable timings you should budget four to five hours. If you are on a schedule, a private car or a transfer arranged with your safari is the sensible option.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip means leaving Ella around 10:00 AM for an afternoon safari from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, then a three hour drive back in the dark, arriving after 9:30 PM. It works, and we run it for guests with no other option, but you only get the evening drive and a long day in vehicles.
Staying one night in Tissamaharama is better in every way that matters. You do the morning safari at gate opening, when animals are most active and the light is best, and you have the option of a full day tour. Guesthouses in Tissamaharama are inexpensive, so the overnight often costs less than the extra transfer time would.
Many travellers treat Yala as the natural next stop after Ella anyway: hill country, then safari, then the south coast. If that is your route, we can pick you up in Ella with your luggage, run the safari the next morning and drop you in Mirissa or Tangalle afterwards.
Suggested plan
- Day 1: Leave Ella after breakfast. Arrive Tissamaharama mid-afternoon. Optional evening safari from 2:00 PM if you are early enough, or rest.
- Day 2: Hotel pick-up at 4:30 AM. Morning safari until about 10:00 AM, or a full day tour until 6:00 PM. Continue to the south coast or back to Ella.
What it costs
The safari itself is priced the same wherever you come from: half day tours from around USD 40 per person, full day from around USD 90, plus park entrance fees paid at the gate. The Ella transfer is quoted separately and depends on group size and whether it is one way or return. Tell us your plan when you enquire and we will send a single all-in quote.
