Yala Safari from Mirissa, Galle and the South Coast
5 min read · Updated
Every beach town from Galle to Tangalle sells a Yala day trip. Here is how far it really is, and the version that gives you a proper safari.
Distances along the coast
- Galle or Unawatuna to the Yala gate: about 3 to 3.5 hours.
- Mirissa or Weligama to the Yala gate: about 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Dikwella or Hiriketiya to the Yala gate: about 2 hours.
- Tangalle to the Yala gate: about 1.5 hours.
- Hambantota to the Yala gate: about 1 hour.
Why the 2 AM day trip disappoints
The coast road is single carriageway most of the way and busy through the towns. The expressway extension to Hambantota shortens the Galle leg a little, but the final stretch to Kirinda is on ordinary roads whatever route you take.
The standard day trip sold in Mirissa or Unawatuna leaves at 2:00 to 2:30 AM so you reach the gate for the 6:00 AM opening, does a morning safari, and drives you back for a late lunch. You spend six or seven hours in a van for four hours in the park, and you are exhausted for the part you came for.
If a day trip is your only option, start from as far east as you can. From Tangalle or Hiriketiya it is a reasonable early start rather than a night drive.
The better version
Stay one night in Tissamaharama or near the park. Leave the beach after breakfast, arrive by mid-afternoon, and either take an evening safari that day or rest for the morning drive. You get the gate-opening slot, the option of a full day tour, and you are back at the beach by the following lunchtime.
It also fits most itineraries naturally. Yala sits between the south coast and both Ella and Arugam Bay, so an overnight here breaks up a long transfer rather than adding one.
Transfers and booking
We arrange pick-ups from Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Dikwella, Hiriketiya and Tangalle, one way or return. The safari price is the same as for guests staying locally; the transfer is quoted separately by distance and group size. Contact us on WhatsApp with your hotel and dates and we will confirm a single price covering the jeep, guide, pick-up and, if you want it, the onward drop-off.
